Tenke Fungurume Tenke is a world-class producing copper-cobalt mine located in the DRC within the prolific Central African Copperbelt. In 2015, Tenke produced 204 thousand tonnes of copper and 16 thousand tonnes of cobalt ( basis) at a net cash cost
| Tenke Fungurume is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 177 kilometers northwest of Lubumbashi in a concession area of approximately 1,600 square kilometers. Through the safe production of copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide, Tenke Fungurume provides metals vital to many industries including transportation, computers, construction, and emerging technologies.
The EIB confirmed today that it will not finance the first phase of the Tenke Fungurume mining project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Tenke project, one of the largest copper-cobalt deposits in the world and majority owned by the giant American mining conglomerate Freeport McMoRan, is notorious for lack of transparency and corruption allegations surrounding it.
Uniquely, at the time, Gcamines' mining title to Tenke Fungurume was transferred to the new joint venture. In 1996, the Rwanda-backed/created Alliance des Forces Democratiques pour la Liberation du Congo-Zaire (AFDL), apparently led by Laurent-Desire Kabila, launched its war against Mobutu.
Tenke Mining has completed the feasibility study for the first phase of production at the Tenke Fungurume copper/cobalt project in Katanga Province, DRC. The results of the feasibility study and environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) have defined initial mine production of 115,000 t/y of copper cathode and 8,000 t/y of cobalt.
Tenke Fungurume is considered to be one of the largest, highest-grade, undeveloped copper/cobalt concessions in the world today. An ongoing, extensive exploration programme is continuing to develop reserves to support future expansions (International Mining, December 2006, pp28-33).
Tenke Fungurume Fungurume SA is also home to one of the world's largest known copper and cobalt deposits, and is the largest copper producer in the DRC. Through the safe production of copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide, TFM provides metals crucial to the transportation, communications, construction, computers, medical science and many emerging technologies.

2019/10/30Tenke Fungurume is classified as a strata-bound copper cobalt deposit. The Tenke Fungurume coppercobalt deposits are typical of those that comprise the Central African Copperbelt. The Copperbelt is located in a major geological structure called the Lufilian Arc, a 500 km fold belt that stretches from Kolwezi in the southern DRC to Luanshya in Zambia.
Freeport McMoRan holds a 56 percent stake in the Tenke Fungurume copper and cobalt mine, through its 70 percent stake in TF Holdings. Congo's state miner Gecamines owns the remaining 20 percent. Lundin, which primarily produces copper, nickel and zinc, said in connection with the deal, it will waive its rights to acquire Tenke mine operator Freeport's stake in TF Holdings.
